The University of Science and Technology Beijing is a multi-disciplinary institution dedicated to excellence in teaching and research, preparing its students to take on the challenges of the 21stcentury. USTB is home to 25,000 students, with nearly half pursuing a graduate degree and over 1800 teaching faculty. Here students and teachers work together, alongside our many partners in private industry and academic institutions, to engage in cutting-edge research particularly in the fields of materials science and engineering, metallurgical engineering, and mining engineering. Since our founding, USTB has always looked outward to build relationships abroad while instilling a global mindset within our students. Every year we send hundreds of students abroad for learning exchanges, while we welcome more and more international students for advanced graduate study and Chinese language learning. Today, due to the number of successful engineers and politicians that have originated here, USTB is known as the "cradle of iron and steel engineers" and "cradle of mayors". With an ever-growing number of alumni both near and abroad, no matter when you go you are sure to find both current and former USTB students working hard to build our global community.
USTB is one of the first universities to enroll international students. Since 1954, more than 8000 international students from 160 countries across the world studied in USTB. In recent years, USTB has made great efforts to explore and improve its international education in teaching philosophy, training pattern and management mode, and has achieved rapid development in the international education system, enrollment, teaching quality, administration and services, and education conditions. USTB has created several brand cultural experiencing activities, such as the "International Culture Festival", "USTB Star of Chinese Competition", and "Chinese Culture Immersion". Currently, there are about 900 international students from 125 countries studying in 64 majors of 13 schools, covering undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral and language learning students, and visiting students.
USTB has a sound scholarship system, including Chinese Government Scholarship, Chinese Government Scholarship Independent Recruitment, Beijing Government Scholarship, USTB Chancellor Scholarship, USTB OutstandingInternational Student Scholarship, and USTB Outstanding International Student Cadre.
Every year, the International Student Center will provide a rich variety of colorful internships and extra-curriculum activities for international students. They have the chance to pay a visit to industrial and commercial enterprises, to the scenery spots such as Forbidden City and the Great Wall; they can also participate in singing, dancing, painting, calligraphy competitions, "Star of Chinese" competition, Chinese debate competitions, as well as sports competitions and New Year parties.
International students who have graduated from USTB varied in their future plans. Some continue to pursue further education in USTB; some hold key positions in a government department, universities and research institutions in their home countries; some work in Chinese teaching or economic and cultural exchanges; and some work in Sino-foreign joint ventures or foreign enterprises in China. They all give a full play to their knowledge and skills which they learnt from USTB, and make a great contribution to the cooperation between countries and strengthen the friendship between peoples.
